Last Evening the Lawrence Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident which took place at approximately 6:11 p.m. on Essex Street near the intersection of Hampshire Street. Two pedestrians were struck by a motor vehicle. A 35 year old pregnant female and her 61 year old mother were treated on scene by Paramedics and EMT’s from Lawrence General Hospital. They were both transported by ambulance to that facility. The 61 year old female identified as Maria Rodriguez of Lawrence was subsequently pronounced dead at Lawrence General Hospital. The operator of the motor vehicle a 22 year old female from Lawrence has not been charged at this time, however the incident is under investigation. She has been interviewed and is cooperating with the investigation.

Any criminal charges will be determined following the results of an investigation being conducted by Lawrence Police, the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Essex State Police Unit from District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s Office . The 35 year old female and her unborn child are in stable condition at a Boston hospital at this time. Drugs and Alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this tragic accident.
