A Name that Will Never Be Forgotten: Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, USMC

Lawrence, MA – “Her spirit and her name is the one we are called on to remember and uplift. I ask you to join me in saying her name in this very moment, so it will never be forgotten” said Mayor Vasquez. “Say her name with me. Diga su nombre conmigo” queueing up the crowd to name the fallen hero in unison: “Johanny Rosario Pichardo.”

In Lawrence, the community pulls together – as it did last night. With one thousand attendees, the Veterans Memorial Stadium was filled with community members from Lawrence and beyond, including fellow service members and former classmates.

The Rosario Pichardo family was accompanied by Mayor Vasquez, Governor Baker, Lt. Governor Polito, Congresswoman Trahan, and Senator Finegold on one side. On the other, Representatives Moran and Devers, Sheriff Coppinger, City Council Members, Lawrence School Committee Members and Greater Lawrence Technical School Committee Members. In the middle – a portrait of Johanny, as chosen by the family, lit like the beacon of hope that she still is.

Prayer and lighting of the candles was led by Father Israel Rodriguez, songs such as God Bless America and Amazing Grace were led by Central Catholic’s Bella Perrotta, and the evening was emceed by Lawrence’s Director of Veterans’ Services, Jaime Melendez.

Transfer to Lawrence is expected in the next 7-10 days. The City will continue to share details as the information becomes available.

"Say her name with me.
